In partnership with Amazon and Together We Can (TWC), Damascus Way has spent the summer preparing a backpack giveaway for families and their kids in Scott County. Last Thursday, August 18th marked the culmination of all our preparation for the backpack giveaway. After some rainfall in the morning, a breezy and sunny afternoon turned into the perfect day for families to stop by with their kids to pick up backpacks, school supplies and headphones. Nearly 300 kids were blessed with supplies and snacks as they look ahead to the new school year!
Damascus Way also had the opportunity to draw attention to our new fatherhood program, which will launch this fall in Scott County. This parenting programming has been given the name “Destiny Dads” and the services will support and enrich relationships between fathers and their children. The vision behind Destiny Dads is deeply tied to the work of Damascus Way and the men we serve, many of whom are fathers. Statistics demonstrate an increased risk for trauma and incarceration among youth who experience absent fathers. Cycles of trauma, addiction and incarceration are all too often perpetuated when family systems lose a healthy and whole father figure. Because of this, Destiny Dads recognizes the value of educating, equipping and enriching fathers and prosperous families.
Moving forward in the next month or so, Damascus Way is thrilled to be launching a father/child focused program with Scott County-Together We Can. We believe that fathers are less likely to reoffend when they have a meaningful relationship with their child. Similarly, children are less likely to enter into the corrections system when they have an emotionally attached and healthy relationship with their father.
Destiny Dads is in the building!
